7 ways to build your childs vocabularly starting now
7 ways to build your childs vocabularly starting now7 ways to build your childs vocabularly starting nowIf you want your child to have a rich and fulfilling life, one of the best things you can do is help build your childs vocabulary. Research shows strong language ability is associated with a number of positive things, including happiness, friendships, connections with family, academic success and a satisfying career.Building your childs language ability is notlage something you should wait to do until theyre old enough to go to school. Vocabulary development is extremely rapid. Between birth and second grade, children, on average, learn about 5,200 root words. The ability to quickly interpret words at 18 months can determine the size of a childs vocabulary later in childhood.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreBy grades three and four, vocabulary also is closely related to children s ability to understand what they read. This is partly because a childs vocabulary is a strong indicator of a childs knowledge of the world. As one who researches the best ways to develop childrens literacy, here are seven things that I believe parents and educators can do to help build childrens language and vocabulary skills.1. Talk about objects and events that interest the childTalk about something that has the childs attention. A mother may notice her 8-month-old baby staring at a large cat and say, Oh look at the nice kitty. She has such pretty eyes and soft fur. Such interactions may also occur when a child points to something and starts trying to talk about it, indicating excited interest. These exchanges are prime opportunities for adults to name, describe and explain things. Occasions when parents and children talk about things they are both attending to are powerful instructional moments. Words are paired with objects, events and emotions. The importance of these exchanges is shown by the fact that the amount of pointing by children at 18 months is related to language development at 42 months.2. Have many conversations with childrenThe amount of language children hear during conversations with adults in the first 18 to 24 months of life matters. Language areas of the childs brain are rapidly developing. The ability to translate sounds into meaningful words is rapidly improving. Linking sounds to meanings quickly enables one to continue to make sense from the words they are hearing. The speed with which children assign meaning to words is strongly related to the amount of language they have heard as part of adult-child conversations.3. Engage in sustained interactionsBy the time children are 2, it is not only the quantity but also the quality of the conversations they hear that matters. At this point to really foster your childs language growth, dont be in a hurry talk with your child about particular objects or events for a decent amount of time. I ts not necessarily a certain amount of time that matters. But there should be at least eight to 10 back-and-forth exchanges between the parent and the child. When children are verbal, these back-and-forth exchanges that take place over many turns are especially valuable.Indeed, preschool children who have longer-lasting conversations show faster brain development and more efficient processing of information than those who have fewer and shorter conversations.4. Read and discuss booksOne of the most powerful of all shared activities is book reading. Books can be shared and enjoyed from the first year of life. They provide endless opportunities to name objects, animals and action. These experiences can be repeated over and over. The activity also gives parents a time to bond with their child while talking about favorite pictures, events and stories.5. Use varied words while expanding world knowledgeChildren acquire knowledge rapidly as they learn words that refer to more complex conce pts. As time goes on, these words will be used during conversations about new ideas and experiences. For example, during a trip to an aquarium a child might see fascinating creatures as their parent names the animal, talks about parts of its body its fins and tail, for instance and how it moves. Or, during a trip to the grocery store, one can name objects, discuss their attributes, talk about where they come from and much more.6. Talk about past eventsThrough language we are able to travel through time to past and future events. As parents talk with children about experiences from the past, they tend to use novel words and children, in turn, are encouraged to use them. For example, a parent may say, Do you remember when we went to the aquarium? The child responds Yes, we saw that big big fish with wings. To which the parent replies Yes that was an enormous stingray. Regular conversations about the past foster vocabulary learning.7. Engage in pretend playLanguage enables children t o construct and live in imaginary worlds. The talk that occurs as they enact their roles in these imaginary worlds leads them to expand their vocabulary. For example, two children are playing with action figures that represent doctors. One child holds a doctor figure and the other is playing with one that is lying on the ground. The doctor says, Be quiet I need to use my stethoscope. The injured figure says, OK. Is that the thing you use to hear my heart? Here we see one child informally teaching a sophisticated word. The second child is learning what a stethoscope is and, as they play, will gain some understanding of how it is used. These evidence-based methods are just a few ways that parents can help build their childrens vocabulary and knowledge of the world.David Dickinson, Professor of Teaching Learning, Vanderbilt UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Great Team Work Needs Moral Guidance
Great Team Work Needs seelenlage GuidanceGreat Team Work Needs Moral GuidanceGreat Team Work Needs Moral Guidance Lundquist, author of Taking Your Team to the Top (McGraw-Hill, 2013)The first thing any business ownershould do in order to blueprint effectively for her team is to consider the type of moral fabric she would prefer to have in her team members. To me personally, morals are the glue that binds together the fabric of team workand what its all about. You can build successful teams without regard to their internal makeup, but without some sort of guidance for behavior, there is certain to be instability. With instability come loss of production and ultimately failure to meet business goals and missions. High morals allow for smooth interaction of team members (mentally and physically), keep undue pressures off the group, and allow for stability, which in turn creates long-term success.Avoiding a Moral FissureFor years the Broncos worked with an internalized code that was never formally stated. But the internalization of the Bronco way was accepted by all and created stability of interaction among departments within the organization. This stability held fast for years and brought the team much success. It wasnt until the club steered away from the Bronco way that things began to unravel. There was internal distrust and poor communication. The club lost its focus. This moral fissure came about because certain personnel hadnt been vetted in the proper manner and lacked an understanding of the teamwork culturethat Denver had developed over years of success in pressure situations. The ultimate goal is to find the correct moral fits for your company and avoid those that will lead to its untimely demise. This starts by evaluating the core set of values necessary to achieve the company mission or goal at hand.Begin by asking yourself the following question.Your Companys Business GoalsIt is vital to the success of your team that you define your purpose and the goals for your business. You should be able to answer this question in one or two sentences that clearly define the products or services that your company offers potential customers. Some companies are created to make money, while others are focused on philanthropy. Certain businesses work hard to create new products, while others try to improve on already existing ones.Andrew Carnegie said, Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results. So from the get-go you have a responsibility to both yourself and your company to define a vision and push off the dock with an understanding of where you will guide the boat.Your goals should be reflected in your morals, and your morals should be reflected in the goals you are looking to achieve. Every team has to set some moral standard concerning what it represents and the core characte ristics to which it wants to implement its efforts. This is notlage to say that every team is required to have the highest moral standards and values at the forefront of all its labors, but those that do build this into their foundations based on their goals are mora apt to have highly productive team members who contribute to the combined work of the group. The more productive and efficient this work is, the more likely it is that the group will achieve its goals. Lack of moral strength puts pressure on the team, both internally and externally, again stealing resources from the combined efforts. This concept is best served when it is addressed at the beginning of any team effort, rather than being dealt with in the middle or as incidents occur.Creating a Level Playing FieldThe Air Force Academy teaches its Honor Code to every incoming doolie (freshman) from the very minute he is sworn in as a cadet. This code is meant to be internalized (through instruction and implementation) to set a moral standard across all members of the Cadet Wing.Essentially, this code is a guiding light for the ultimate vision and goals of the Air Force. The service is clear on what it wants from its team members, and it tells them this from day one.The code says We will not lie, steal or cheat, nor tolerate among us anyone who does. Thats a pretty clear-cut, basic statement. But it ensures that everyone is working on the same page, level, and playing field, while also ensuring that all members of the team can depend on the words and actions of every member.Self-policing through the non-toleration clause brings some internal ownership. Its not easy, and it can be difficult for every individual, as well as for the group and the team. But this all starts with defining your business goals for your company. The Air Force took a monumental step in making clear what it expected from its team members because it not only defined its personal goals, but also laid the foundation for every cadet and team member to come, which demonstrates the importance of understanding your own businesss goals.Author BioCarl M. T. Ted Lunquist II, author of Taking your Team to the Top(McGraw-Hill, 2013)is a former football player, collegiate coach, Air Force Intelligence Officer, pro football scout and NFL Club Executive and General Manager. A renowned leadership expert, he is currently a blogger, television analyst, radio personality and commentator.

Entry-level positions no longer require entry-level qualifications. Skill development, previous work or internship experience, and even volunteering are critical components to good entry-level hires. Formulating a strategy for engaging and recruiting young talent in the current job market/ hiring climate ensures your talent pool doesnt run dry.Well-crafted internship programs are gold mines for generating future full-time employees. As a recruiter, you must learn to recognize a candidates capabilities for a role. Young talent often lacks some skills and role-specific experience. Rather than writing them off until they are better equipped for a future role, report the areas where the intern will require training and development. For instance, an intern will not likely be well-versed in all the programs and tools utilized at your company. Training and certifications allow interns to advance in their roles and make them better prospects for future full-time employment. Immersing interns into your robust development program sets them up for success and instills a sense of dedication to your organization by nurturing their growth.Tip Introduce interns and en try-level hires to training outside of your traditional workplace programs so they can explore their interests and build on strengths they can bring back into their roles.Create a clear transition planIn 2018, NACE reported the conversion rate for interns to full-time employees at more than 45 percent. When recruiting interns with the future in mind, establish a clear plan before the internship begins. Go as far as to set a deadline for a decision to transition an individual from an internship to a full-time role. This will pad your talent pipeline and establish clear expectations for both interns and the HR team.Tip A transition plan benefits the internship program because it lays down a sufficient trial period and establishes a timeline for regular check-ins. 2013 Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) Rates
2013 Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) Rates2013 Basic Housing Allowance (BAH) RatesBasic Housing Allowance rates for 2013 Enlisted without dependents Officers without dependents Enlisted with dependents Warrant Officers with dependents Officers with dependents Guard and Reserve Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) provides uniformed Service members equitable housing compensation cousined on housing costs in local civilian housing markets within the United States when government quarters are elend provided. A uniformed service member stationed outside the U.S., including U.S. territories and possessions, not furnished government housing, is eligible for Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA). The 2013 BAH rates took effect January 1, 2013 with an increase of an average of 3.8 percent. The updated BAH Rates are the largest average increase in four years according to defense officials. However, despite the overall average increase, approximately one in five locations will see a rate decrease. Memb ers with dependents are seeing an average increase in BAH of approximately $60 per month. Veterans and their families using the Post-9/11 GI Bill are also seeing an average increase in their housing benefit, which is based on the BAH rate for an E-5 with dependents. In areas where rates have decreased, the decrease applies only to members newly reporting to those locations. Members are protected by individual rate protection which ensures that those already assigned to a given location will not see their BAH rate decrease, however, they will receive the increase if the rate goes up. This assures that members who have made long-term commitments in the form of a lease or contract are not penalized if the areas housing costs decrease. Three components are included in the BAH computation zentralwert current market rent average utilities (including electricity, heat, and water/sewer) and average renters insurance. Total housing costs are calculated for six housing profiles (based on dwel ling type and number of bedrooms) in each military housing area. Basic Allowance for Housing rates are then calculated for each pay grade, both with and without dependents. BAH enables Service members to live off-base comparably to their civilian counterparts, but it is not designed to cover all housing costs for all members. Actual expenses may be higher or lower based on a members choice of housing and where they live. Because members are free to make housing choices that best suit their needs, a member may choose to use all their housing allowance to rent for more expensive housing close to the duty station, or have a longer commute for either a larger or less expensive house in an outlying area. BAH is an allowance, and is therefore not subject to income taxes. You may also view past BAH rate tables 2012 BAH 2011 BAH 2010 BAH 2009 BAH 2008 BAH 2007 BAH 2006 BAH 2005 BAH 2004 BAH 2003 BAH Frequently Asked Questions Who is eligible for BAH?A member assigned to permanent duty w ithin the 50 United States, who is not furnished government housing, is eligible for aBasic Allowance for Housing(BAH), based on the members rank, dependency status, and permanent duty station ZIP Code. A member stationed overseas (except in Hawaii and Alaska), including U.S. territories and possessions, who is not furnished government housing, is eligible for anOverseas Housing Allowance(OHA) based on the members dependency status. If a member with dependents (except for a member paying child support) is serving an UNACCOMPANIED overseas tour, the member is eligible for BAH at the with-dependent rate, based on the dependents U.S. residence ZIP Code, plus FSH at the OCONUS PDS, if the member is not provided government housing overseas. I looked up the current year BAH amount for my grade and ZIP Code and its less than I was getting last year. Am I going to lose money? No. BAH rate protection keeps an individual from having a reduction in BAH as long as the individual maintains unint errupted eligibility for BAH. This means an individual is authorized the 1 January rate for the individuals grade and location or the housing allowance being paid on 31 December of the previous year, whichever is larger. Can I ever loserate protection?Three separate circumstances may lead to a change in your status that interrupts your eligibility for the allowance, and then, only if the published allowance for your grade and location is less than what you are getting now.First, and fruchtwein common, a decrease occurs when you PCS to a location at which the housing cost is less than at your currentduty station. At the new duty station you get a lower housing allowance, but you should be no worse off, because the allowance is driven by the housing costs there. Second, if you are demoted, your housing allowance reverts to the then-current published table of allowances for your lower grade. Promotions do not lower your housing allowance. Third, if your dependency status changes (from with-dependent to without-dependent, or vice versa), your housing allowance is determined by your new dependency status and the then-current publishedtable of allowancesfor your grade. If, in a given year, I lose rate protection, am I protected from further decreases in the following year(s)?Yes. An individual is authorized the larger of (a) the January 1 published BAH for grade and location or (b) the housing allowance being paid on December 31. Does rate protection keep me from getting rate increases? No. An individual is authorized the largerof(a) the January 1 published BAH for grade and location or (b) thehousing allowancebeing paid on December 31. If I get promoted, do I get the protected BAH amount for my new pay grade? No. If you are promoted, your BAH rate is the then-current published BAH for your new (higher) grade, with the following exception. If you get promoted, and are in a location where the current published BAH for your new grade is lower than the BAH amount you we re receiving before, you continue to receive the higher BAH amount. Will I see big changes in housing allowances on January 1?Typically changes in housing allowances are modest. Allowances reflect the costs associated with household rental. Generally, rental prices change between 2%-5 percent from year to year, with hot markets changing 5%-10%. Housing allowances typically change accordingly. I still have some out-of-pocket expensesYes, some members at a location may have out-of-pocket expenses. BAH rates are set at the zentralwert for each grade and housing profile. For a given individual, an out-of-pocket expense may be incurred based on the actual housing choice. If a member rents above the median rate for the grade/profile, that member incurs out-of-pocket expenses. For example, if a member lives in a 3-bedroom townhouse with lease and utilities that cost $1,200, and the median cost for that dwelling in the area is $1,100 that member has out-of-pocket expenses of $100. The oppo site is true for an individual who chooses to occupy a less expensive residence. Only a member whose housing costs are exactly at or below the median will have no out-of-pocket expenses. The BAH for my grade doesnt begin to cover my mortgage paymentBAH is based on rental data. A homeowners monthly mortgage payment is not used in the computation because the monthly cash outlay of a homeowner is not a good indicator of the economic costs of home ownership. The variables needed to compute this include such difficult to measure factors as the expected appreciation in the value of the residence, the amount of down payment, theopportunity costsof interest from down payments, settlement costs, and the tax savings due to the interest and tax payments deduction. Therefore, BAH reflects the current rental market conditions not the historical circumstances surrounding various mortgage loans. What is the source of BAH rental data?Current data is obtained from multiple sources, employing a chec ks and balances approach to ensure reliability and accuracy of data. Current residential vacancies, identified in local newspapers and real estate rental listings, are an important, but not our only, source of data. Vacancies are selected at random, and subjected to a multi-tiered screening process to ensure accuracy and reliability. Telephone interviews establish the availability and exact location of each residential unit sampled. The sample is designed to obtain a statistical confidence level of 95 percent or higher. Yellow page listings of apartments and real estate management companies are employed to identify units for rental pricing. It is also common to consultreal estateprofessionals in a locality to obtain important confirmation and additional sources of data. When available, fort/post/base housing referral offices are contacted to tap local military expertise and gain insights into the local concerns of uniformed members. Finally, DoD and the Services conduct on-site ev aluations at various locations to confirm and ensure reliability and accuracy of the cost data. Future enhancements include examining potential Internet uses as well as housing data available from other government agencies. What is included in median housing costs?Current market rent, average utilities and renters insurance. Doesfamilysize make a difference? No. Although BAH distinguishes between with-dependent and without-dependent, the with-dependent compensation is based on comparable civilians using average family size. Why does someone living in another city get more BAH than I do, when it seems to me that housing is more expensive here?Accurately determining if one location has more expensive rental markets than another is a scientific and statistical exercise. Sometimes, individuals rely on limited personal experience or newspaper and magazine articles to make that judgment. What is BAH-Diff?BAH-DIFF is the housing allowance amount for a member who is assigned to single-type q uarters and who is authorized a BAH solely by reason of the members payment of child support. A member is not authorized BAH-DIFF if the monthly rate of that child support is less than the BAH-DIFF amount. The BAH-DIFF amounts, originally calculated in 1997, are updated annually based on changes in the Basic Pay tables. For more information contact your servicing finance office or consult JFTR, par. U10008. I amdivorced with children, what is myBAH allowance? It depends on whether or not you have legal and physical custody of your children, pay child support, and/or live in single-type government quarters. If you have legal and physical custody of your children, then you are authorized BAH at the with-dependent rate if not assigned adequate family-type government quarters. If your former spouse has custody and you are paying adequate child support (at least in an amount of yourBAH-DIFF rate) you are authorized BAH at the with-dependent rate if not in government quarters or BAH-DIFF if assigned single-type government quarters.

5 Things 1099 Employees Need to Know About Taxes
5 Things 1099 Employees Need to Know About Taxes5 Things 1099 Employees Need to Know About Taxes We are now in the era of the 1099 worker. Whether you head to your employers office or spend most of your time working from home, being a private contractor zum besten vonvides freedoms you may not get from traditional employment. With that freedom, however, comes great tax responsibility. Private contractors and self-employed individuals must learn how their new employment status affects their tax filing, how much they pay in taxes and when they pay. Mistakes in any of these areas can cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars - which is why we reached out to tax experts to generate a list of five invaluable tax tips for freelancers and private contractors. Curt Mastio, a CPA who runs Founders CPA and teaches at Northwestern University, said that before figuring out ways to nail your taxes every year, you have to become familiar with the differences between your old W-2 work and your new life as a 1099 worker. The biggest change You are now responsible to pay estimated taxes and your social security payments. As someone employed by a company and receiving a W-2, your employer is withholding a certain amount of your paycheck each pay period and remitting that on your behalf, Mastio said. When you become self-employed , no one is doing that on your behalf. Therefore, he said, you are responsible for making quarterly income tax payments. These payments are the governments way of making sure youre paying what you should pay ahead of time. There was a time when you had to mail in your quarterly payments but thankfully, the IRS has made it possible to pay your quarterly taxes (also known as estimated taxes) through their website. In fact, you have the option of paying your quarterly taxes every month. If youre someone who struggles to budget properly and have a spend it while youve got it mindset, submitting on a monthly basis can be helpful, Mastio said .Self-employment tax has the potential to be confusing because at first glance, it seems like it would be the tax you pay for being self-employed. However, according to the United States tax code, self-employment tax encompasses your FICA payments, which are cash contributions to the nations Medicare and social security coffers. As a W-2 worker, your employer pays half of your FICA (7.65 percent) and you pay the other half. Just like your income tax, both your and your employers FICA payments are made automatically. When you become self-employed, youre on the hook for the full 15.3 percent since,in this instance, you are both the employee and the employer, Mastio said.Failure to understand this can lead to not rahmen aside enough cash at the end of the year to cover your self-employment tax obligations. With these two new shifts in your tax obligations, you might be wondering, How do you estimate your income and self-employment tax payments? If its your first year as a 1099 worker and you dont have a CPA doing your taxes, Chelsea Krause, an accounting expert at business financial site Merchant Maverick , says the IRS Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center is your home for understanding how much you might have to pay. The page has a link to the 1040-ES, which is a worksheet that will tell you, based on your income for the past three months, how much you need to pay for the quarter. The worksheet takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. In the event that youve filed as a 1099 worker the previous year, then Dave Du Val, an Enrolled Agent with TaxAudit.com , says the following percentages are the governments guide for how much you should save If possible, make up any shortfall in the taxes you owe by increasing estimated tax payments as soon as you are making more than you expected, Du Val said.Tax experts across the board emphasized the importance of responsible saving so that youve got enough cash stored up to meet your tax obligations each quarter and at t he end of the year. Krause says many freelancers and private contractors entrap themselves in a pay with the next check type of mentality. As a 1099contractor, it can be easy to see your whole check as usable money and to convince yourself youll put more into your tax savings next check, Krause said. Doing this is incredibly difficult to recover from and is a very slippery slope. She and Mastio suggest opening a separate savings account into which you can deposit money youll use for your tax payments. Make it a priority and build it into your monthly budgeting. If it has been a problem in the past, simply open up a separate bank account and transfer 25-30 percent of each months earnings to this account and use that account to make your quarterly tax payments, Mastio said. You may end up over-estimating your payments, but at least you avoid the headache and panic of setting aside too little. If youve got the resources to pay for tax software or a tax professional, doing so will sav e you tax-related time, stress and energy each month, experts say. Its easy to become overwhelmed with keeping track of client appointments, doing client work and following up to make sure that you get paid, said Crystalynn Shelton, a CPA and a tax analyst at Fit Small Business . Accounting software like QuickBooks Self Employed makes it easy for you to bill your clients, accept online payments and track expenses. When you can keep track of your income, you get a better read on how much you owe in taxes. From there, you can use tax software from companies like QuickBooks to estimate your quarterly tax payments. Should the thought of DIYing your taxes intimidate you, hiring a tax pro could be your best option. The benefits, said Mark Steber, chief tax officer at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, are significant both for accurate tax payments and maximizing deductions. Self-employed workers have some of the richest and best tax rules if you know where to find them, Steber said. The best way to get the most from your return is to speak with a tax pro to ensure youre getting all of your deductions and credits.J.R. Wave Springs Have Sprung
Wave Springs Have Sprung Wave Springs Have Sprung Springs have long been used in mechanical engineering but an underrated version of this ubiquitous device is the wave spring, which affects its share of industries. The springs most people are familiar with are coil springs, round wire coil springs in pens and shocks in cars, explains Ben Moskalik, a senior RD engineer for Smalley, a wave spring manufacturing company based in Lake Zurich, IL. Wave springs are different because theyre bedrngnis torsional but pure bending. They have both a bending force and a bending stress formula. What comes out of that, because theyre different formulas, is generating the same amount of load and the same amount of deflection. But its in lower height than a coil spring. You use them to reduce the size of the applications you might be designing. He notes that wave springs were actually stamped a half century ago or longer, like a flat washer but wavy.It would be used for preloading, Moskalik says, It was there if you needed a little bit of force but not a lot of deflection. Then coil wave springs started and they werent just for single turn but could do multiple turns. In fact, multiple turns were what allowed us to do the crest wave spring and it looks kind of like a honeycomb. That happened maybe 40 years ago. Ever since, the goal has been to perfect that. For example, in the last 10 years, we started making round wire wave springs because we could generate a lot of load in a small radial space. An example of a spring application. Image SmalleyA technology that wave springs are commonly used for is the preloading of bearings. For example, people who have bearings in electric motors or anywhere you might be going at a high speed of rotation, he says. Bearings can vibrate, make a lot of noise and create premature wear. So when you put a wave spring in with a bearing, it actually takes out the internal slack of it, extends the life of it and will make it quieter. You can take that th ought forward with any application that has some sort of slack in it. It could be thermal expansion, for example. You also see the crest-to-crest version frequently in the oil industry, he says. This is where they need a great deal of load for something but need it to travel like a normal spring would, Moskalik says. One example would be if they need a Murray connector to hold the overall oil platform in place or it could be in a situation where theyre putting in seals for ball valves. They have to make sure the seal is applying a lot of pressure to the ball of a valve. They would have nested wave springs pushing a lot of load to keep it in place or it would leak. While in many ways, Moskalik says, wave springs have neared their potential, one area theyre still improving in would be when it comes to shrinking their size. The smallest part we might have in durchmesser is a quarter inch and were going beyond that, he says. That will benefit industries like medical, where surgical instru ments need to be coiled in a smaller diameter but still have smaller length in a coil spring. People dont realize how often these springs are helping.Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Learn more about the latest manufacturing solutions at ASMEsAM3D Conference Expo For Further Discussion Wave springs are different because theyre not torsional but pure bending. They have both a bending force and a bending stress formula.Ben Moskalik, Senior R&D engineer, Smalley

How to live and lead a life in high-fidelity
How to live and lead a life in high-fidelity How to live and lead a life in high-fidelity If you listened to music on a pair of headphones before 1958, you were listening in mono. The sound was just a single channel, recorded with one microphone. The mono experience was flat, lacking depth or detail. With the invention of the stereo headphone, listeners could hear distinct tracks recorded from different microphones playing at once for the first time. The experience became fuller, more immersive. Inserting relative space allowed the music to sound closer to what it was like in the recording studio. This was a thrilling development for the music industry and nothing short of a revolution in audio.Just as sound comes to life in stereo, with 360-degree immersion, dimension, perspective and balance, the same is true in business and in life. All of your lifeâs experiences become more fulfilled when you experience the world with the richer qualities of high-fidelity stereo. Learning becomes deeper and more profound. Having a stereo mindset is fundamental to leadership. In my exp erience, humans are very much creatures of habit and comfort. Thereâs a sense of safety in a one-track, mono approach. But the problem is, if we stay on one track, we are depriving ourselves of all thatâs to be experienced and learned along the roads less traveled. Itâs only when we leave our comfort zones that we have the opportunity to gain new perspective, experience new vantage points and approach our most stubborn obstacles from a new angle.Take an International AssignmentHow do you find high-fidelity? Have the courage to raise your hand for the difficult or uncomfortable assignment that challenges you to your core. In testing your limits, youâll find you go further and further each time. Only then will you be able to take ownership of the career you want.Take the wheel and hit the gas. Better yet, get on a plane. Ask to go abroad, and donât just take the easy assignment. Be more than a visitor and dive into the social fabric of the society, living and working in a ne w place. For those from America, the UK doesnât count. They speak English and the cultures are too similar! Challenge yourself by going to Germany, Japan or China. Stay for three or more years so you can learn the rhythm of life. Learn the 6,000 years of history. Learn how to think differently and adapt to a whole new decision-making process.Taking an international assignment is one of the most enriching things you can do. The experience will shape your career and your entire life. In our increasingly globalized world, the ability to listen to and be challenged by different people from different places is the single most important skill for any executive to have.Find a Great PartnerWhen you live in a high-fidelity stereo environment, youâll realize that while your own perspectives are valuable, so too are those of the people closest to you. We all have people in our lives whose opinions and counsel carry special weight â" our partners (personal and professional). And these partners will have a tremendous influence and impact on our careers. In a way, the perfect partner defies physics. They balance you â" yet they propel you forward. They keep you grounded, and they lift you up. A great partner will open your eyes to see nuance, hear the words behind the words, and understand people i n a different way. They should challenge you too â" and you must be humble to listen and accept their viewpoints. In the same way, be a great partner to them as well, and only then will the full dimension of stereo be realized.ListenWith so many bright young minds graduating school and entering the workforce this time of year, listening is a critical part of their ongoing education. The business world also draws inspiration from the global community. To neglect this invaluable resource is nothing short of tone-deaf.Strive to listen and absorb the diverse viewpoints and perspectives in your life and work â" they will lead to teamwork, mutual respect, accountability, and integrity. Also, always maintain a curious mind. At HARMAN, Iâm constantly encouraging questions and challenges to my assumptions. This approach has always led to better outcomes for myself and for my teams.Leaving my comfort zoneâ¦leaning on my partner (my wife, in my case)â¦and listening to different voices⦠These experiences comprised my business education. The world wants the best ideas and the greatest hits, every time. No one cares where they come from. Live a life in stereo and youâre sure to build a legacy of hits, as opposed to the fading one-hit wonder. This article was adapted from the commencement address delivered by Dinesh Paliwal to Miami Universityâs Farmers School of Business Class of 2017.

These are the cities with the most disengaged workers
These are the cities with the most disengaged workers These are the cities with the most disengaged workers Previous research has found that just around one-third of American workers care about their jobs, and more recent findings seem to reinforce those conclusions.A new survey from staffing firm Accountemps found that out of 28 American cities surveyed, the four that had the most âdisengaged workersâ were New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Miami. Overall, employees reported being disengaged an average of â26% of the time.âAn independent research firm surveyed more than 2,800 American employees in 28 âmajorâ nationwide. Here are some of the points that stood out.So, which cities are on the other end of the spectrum? Charlotte, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City led the way with the âmost engagedâ employees. This map shows what workers say will help up their work âengagementâ in different cities throughout the country - better perks seems to be the top answer. But keeping this in mind, itâs still clear that âbetter perksâ takes the cake for most western cities surv eyed, while we can chalk it up to more of a mix of all three listed factors elsewhere in the country. These factors could help employees stay on track at workThe research found that the top factor employees said would help them become âmore engagedâ on the job was âbetter perks (e.g., free food, nap rooms, on-site gym)â at 37%. Both âmore challenging workâ and âless bureaucracy/red tapeâ were at 31%. Both âlighter workloadâ and âmore team building/work outingsâ came in at 22%, while âa better bossâ only claimed 19%.In terms of age, âbetter perksâ was the most popular choice among those 18-34 at 47% and those 35-54 at 38%. But employees 55 and older were the biggest fans of âless bureaucracy/red tapeâ at 35%.Michael Steinitz, executive director of Accountemps, commented on the research in a statement:âEmployers shouldnât take a one-size-fits-all approach to improving employee engagement. ⦠Each worker and office environment are unique,â he s aid. âManagers should continually check in with their staff to gauge satisfaction levels and learn what motivates or potentially disengages them.â

Potential Help for the Prostate
Potential Help for the Prostate Potential Help for the Prostate They wake up feeling fine and then hear the words so many men fear: You have prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is one of the leading killers of men, but progress thankfully continues to be made in treatment. Kenji Shimada, a professor of engineering in the mechanical engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University is part of a team trying to increase the success rate further with better training through software. The Skill of Freezing The prostate is right below the bladder and in the middle of the prostate is the urethra. Its pretty small but placed in a delicate space, Shimada explains. Open surgery is common for dealing with prostate cancer, but our software focuses on the freezing of the cancerous tissue. It is a heat-transfer simulation. You want to kill the cancer cells but not kill anything else. We use eight to fifteen cryoprobes. You insert the needle between the rectum and are guiding it into the prostate at about 1 or 2 millimeters in diameter and then inject the gas through the needle. You start freezing tissue to create an iceball. On 3D computer graphics, we simulate how the iceballs will connect to each and grow into a different shape. Shimada explains that part of the issue is that each person has different shapes and sizes for their prostate and when cancer goes to Stage 2 and Stage 3, the surface of the prostate starts deforming. It can be getting bumps or a dent. The target shape is different from patient to patient and thats why it takes practice to have perfect placement of cryoprobes. Prostate cancer stats. Source: American Cancer Society. Image: Carnegie Mellon University Similarity to Video Games Though what theyre trying to do is serious, the software creation, Shimada says, is similar to video games. You place those cryoprobes literally into the 3D model on the computer screen and then start freezing the tissue and you will start seeing the iceballs growing, he says. Here you have a chance, without using a physical system or cadaver, to simulate this cryoprobe placing. You eventually get the skill of placing the probe in the right place the first time and that will create a better situation with the iceball that fits the target. If you place the probe in bad locations, it will give feedback that its too close to the prostate boundary. We use finite defense methods, a medical method, to simulate the heat-transfer equation, he adds. Shimada says its a good feeling to know theyre giving medical personnel the time and space to learn this important procedure. You want to make your mistakes here instead of in surgery. And you feel free to explore here and learn. You need that room to grow. This is a devastating disease, but giving confidence to those who use this method can give confidence to the patient. Stand Out in Your Next Interview by Being Fully Prepared
Stand Out in Your Next Interview by Being Fully Prepared Stand Out in Your Next Interview by Being Fully Prepared When it comes to job interviews, only the strongest survive and either move onto the next round or get a call with an offer. So, what can you do to ensure you beat out the competition in your next interview? Prepare. Sounds simple, but too few candidates go into an interview fully prepared. Here are four tips to help you do just that, from ResumeSpice, one of the top interview prep services. Tip #1: Research. A big part of preparing for a job interview is learning all you can about the hiring company. What do they do? Who are their customers? What challenges are they currently facing? And what are their main products and services? You can read through their website, Google them for the latest news, and view their employees backgrounds on LinkedIn. We always recommend setting up a Google alert for their company name so you dont miss any important news. You can also seek out current information by viewing their social media sites. Tip #2: Assess Once you know more about the company, you should have a good understanding of where you fit in. If you donât, thoroughly read through the job description. Check LinkedIn for employees who are currently in similar roles or who may have left the role. What are their backgrounds? What similar skills do you have? Focus on your most relevant accomplishments. Tip #3: Develop. Develop your responses to common interview questions. In most cases, youâll also be asked questions specific to the information provided on your resume, as well as behavioral-based questions, such as âTell me about a time when you (fill in the blank).â When responding, try to tie in a specific example of how you went above and beyond or made a difference at a past employer. Just make sure you dont give these interview answers! Beyond responses, you should also be developing a list of your own questions to ask. Not only will you make a better impression with the hiring manager, but youâll be able to dig deeper into the role and employer to ensure theyâre the right fit for you. Here are some of the best questions to ask an interviewer. Tip #4: Get ready. A few days before your interview, make sure you have appropriate attire to wear. You should wear a business suit thatâs neutral in color, paired with professional shoes. Keep any cologne, perfume, and jewelry to a minimum. Also, make sure you have several copies of your resume, a notebook and a pen to take notes, and the correct address of the interview location. Preparing for an interview isnât difficult. But it certainly takes an investment of time to ensure youâre completely ready once the big day arrives. Simply follow the tips above and youâll be well on your way to setting yourself apart from your competition. Ready to get expert help preparing for your next interview? Connect with ResumeSpice. Liberal Arts and Your Career
Liberal Arts and Your Career Liberal Arts and Your Career There arent good jobs out that there- none that come easily to mind at least- that do not require the ability to learn, think and communicate. Can you come up with any? These abilities and other extremely valuable ones can be acquired through liberal arts education. Liberal Arts The liberal arts refer to a wide range of academic subjects that can prepare students for a variety of occupations. College majors that fall under this category do not typically train students for any one career. It includes broad areas of study such as the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics. The humanities include subjects such as English, drama, music, dance, and language. Sociology, psychology, geography, and economics are all social sciences. Biology and physics are two examples of natural sciences. You can major or minor in a liberal arts subject or you can supplement your education in another area with classes in this area. If you choose a career-specific major, for example, accounting or physical therapy, your college will very likely require you to take liberal arts courses. A Great Source for Soft Skills Regardless of the career you choose, certain qualities called soft skills will make you invaluable to employers and are vital to your success in many occupations including those in technology. They include critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity and innovation, research skills, writing and oral communication, interpersonal skills and the ability to learn. You may already have some of these abilities, but you must find a way to acquire those you dont. The best way to do that is through a liberal arts education. Regardless of your major, make room in your schedule for classes in literature, history, sociology, and psychology. Liberal Arts Education Comes Under Fire Its hard to imagine anyone finding fault with studying the liberal arts- after all, it can provide you with soft skills that are crucial to your career success. There are people, however, who would like to do away with this area of study in favor of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education. They cite statistics that show American students are far behind their counterparts in other countries where these subjects are emphasized to the exclusion of the liberal arts. They believe taking classes in the liberal arts is a waste of time ... and dont even get them started on choosing it as a college major. They predict anyone who chooses to do that will have a dismal future. Wait just a minute! others argue. Without liberal arts education what will happen to creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship?, they ask. The US has always been a country of entrepreneurs and innovators and many believe that liberal arts education is responsible for that. While American students may not be as skilled in science and technology, they are far ahead in creativity. Journalist Fareed Zakaria, in an article titled Why Americaâs Obsession With STEM Education is Dangerous (The Washington Post, March 26, 2015), says that to innovate we must have an understanding of how people and societies work, what they need and want. This awareness, according to Zakaria, comes from a broad general education, rather than a narrowly focused one. People who espouse the importance of STEM education to the exclusion of the liberal arts fail to recognize some very important realities. First among them is that not everyone is cut out for a STEM career. We must recognize that we are all different from one another. Each of us has different values, interests, strengths, and personalities that make certain occupations more suitable for us than others. In addition we, as a society, need people to work in other occupations. Where will we be without museum curators and archaeologists? Secondly, there are careers that require a liberal arts background. Finally, and probably the most compelling argument is that without taking at least some liberal arts classes, many people will fail to acquire the soft skills they need to succeed in almost every job you could possibly think of. Majoring in Liberal Arts There is room for both STEM and liberal arts in the education of our future workforce. Students should be exposed to both areas of study, but we must also realize that there is a suitable career for everyone. You may find that a career that emphasizes the liberal arts is a better fit for you while your best friend may find success in a STEM occupation. If you want to pursue a career that requires you to get an undergraduate degree in one of the subjects that fall under this category, you should certainly do that. If you will ultimately need a masters degree for your chosen occupation, you may have some flexibility regarding your undergraduate major. Choosing a liberal arts major will allow you to not only amass the soft skills that will follow you through graduate school and your future career, but it will also expose you to knowledge in a wide range of subjects.

What to Include in a Resume Experience Section
What to Include in a Resume Experience Section What to Include in a Resume Experience Section When youre writing a resume, the resume experience section provides detailed information about your employment history. This is the real heart of your resume, and the more years you have been employed, the more decisions you will have to make about what to include and what to leave off in this section. Whats Included in the Experience Section of a Resume This section of your resume is where employers will look to see what jobs and job titles youve held in the past, providing them with an informative picture of your career arc. Ideally, you want the experience section of your resume to demonstrate growth. Over the course of your career so far, youâve almost certainly added skills, experience, and responsibility. This section will highlight how youâve developed as a candidate, as well as providing a sense that youâre an ambitious person whoâs always learning. If your career path has taken some twists and turns, this might give you pause, but donât worry; even a zig-zag path can demonstrate growth. Some of the strongest candidates are those whoâve added skills in other, seemingly unrelated fields. Itâs all about how you present the information. Itâs also fine to leave out jobs that donât fit the story youâre trying to tell the hiring manager. Writing the Experience Section List the companies you worked for, dates of employment, the positions you held, and brief descriptions of your work responsibilities, enriched with keywords and enhanced with bulleted lists of quantifiable achievements. This work history is typically presented in reverse chronological order, beginning with your current job and working back in time. Internships, summer jobs, and temporary jobs, in addition to permanent positions, can all be included in this part of your resume. You do not have to include every job that you have held, especially if you have several years of experience or have worked in unrelated fields. Entry-level employees, who do not have a lot of on-the-job experience, should include every job possible while emphasizing the skills that match the job listing. But once you have worked for more than 10 years, you may find that some of your earlier jobs are less relevant to your career. You can leave those positions off, or group together earlier experience in a very truncated format at the end of your resume. Here are two examples of how early jobs can be listed on your resume: Additional experience includes retail sales jobs at Barrys Books (20XX-20XX), Cindys Clothing Store (20XX-20XX), and waitressing at Muffins and More (20XX-20XX).Additional experience includes early roles at ABC Company and XYZ company. How Much Experience to List Typically, a resume will have information about your most recent 10 to 15 years of experience. Beyond that timeframe, you do not need to include details unless the positions are relevant to your current career. In some industries, including experience that dates back more than 10 or 15 years can actually hurt candidates. For example, in tech, including jobs that focused on older, outdated technologies might make a candidate look stuck in the past, even if theyâve kept their skills current. Writing Resume Job Descriptions For each company you have worked for, you will want to provide your title, the companys name and location, the years you were employed, and a short summary of your responsibilities and accomplishments. Avoid making the mistake of simply listing tasks. You want to use this section to highlight your abilities and accomplishments. Use resume action words and focus on demonstrating that you helped the company solve its problems and achieve its goals; bonus points if you can do so with a dollar sign attached. These highlighted achievements will âpopâ on the page if you separate them, using bullets, from the descriptions of your work responsibilities. Itâs also a smart strategy to boldface dollar figures, growth percentages, or other key accomplishments. Resume Experience Section Examples Here are two examples of how to write resume experience sections. Sample One: This is for an entry-level job candidate. Here, instead of using the heading âProfessional Experience,â one can use the broader caption âExperience Highlightsâ â" which allows the inclusion of a description of recent college training: Experience HighlightsUniversity of Washington, Seattle, WAStudent ~ Environmental Science (9/20XX to 6/20XX)Successfully completed comprehensive course of study in environmental science, laying solid groundwork for career in environmental restoration. Key coursework included: Environmental Biology, Geology and Soils, Air Pollution Meteorology, Waste Treatment Technology, and Ecology. Internships:Acme Environmental Consulting (Spring 20XX): Honed expertise in soil sampling, documentation, and client relations during internship with established environmental consulting firm.Hamilton Mine Rehabilitation Project (Fall 20XX, Winter 20XX): Under the direction of faculty advisor Dr. Sarah Rose, participated in $1.4 million reclamation project to reclaim mercury-contaminated mining field.Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park Service, CaliforniaPark Guide / Trail Laborer (Summers 20XX and 20XX)Provided nature enrichment workshops and led park tours for park visitors; ensured timely main tenance of trails and park facilities.Rehired based on proven teamwork, work ethic, and customer service excellence.Played key role in restoring 18-mile wilderness trail destroyed during wildfires. Expand Sample Two: This is a sample work experience section written for a tech professional. Note that it is strengthened using a brief description of the candidateâs technical proficiencies. Youâll also see how the candidateâs current position is written using present tense, while her previous position employs past tense. Professional ExperienceABC Tech Innovation, Syracuse, NYSoftware Programmer (9/20XX to Present)Core Technologies: Clarion, C, Visual Basic, Windows Server operating systemsServe as team lead for software application development in Clarion. Install and configure test environments, troubleshoot design issues, and mentor clients in installing systems upgrades. Provide continuing evaluation of software functionality. Key Achievements:Coordinated and led development teamsâ on-time completion of new software launch within challenging 3-monthDesigned and presented well-received client training workshops in new software use.XYZ Tech Solutions, Syracuse, NYC Programmer (7/20XX to 8/20XX)Core technologies: Python, C, Java, PHPBrought on board to improve platform performance and responsiveness and scale systems for client use within agile programming environment. Key Achievements:Developed new testing process that reduced time to software rollout by 35%.Selected by development director to train new hires in company-specific work procedures. Expand These are only two examples of effective strategies for structuring the âExperienceâ section of your resume: there are many ways you can present the information about each job. A resume template can help guide you toward choosing a design that works for you. Whatever style and format you select, make sure to be consistent. If you are using bullet points to describe your most recent position, you should use bullet points to describe each position you have held. If you have the years you worked left-aligned for one job, make sure that you follow that same alignment for each and every position listed in the section.

A quick search will give you dozens of suggestions to assist you as you build a document that is sure to help you land your dream job. Or so they say. The fact is, while many of those suggestions are useful, some are also the result of fads or trends that will fade in time. Instead of adding one more trendy list to that Internet logjam, here are 10 resume-writing tips that are likely to stand the test of time. 10 Solid Resume-Writing Tips That Will Never Be Outdated 1. Dont lie or exaggerate. Honesty should be your top priority when it comes to your resume. By all means, list your achievements, accomplishments, and skills, but do not embellish them or make stuff up. Nothing good will come of it, and thats a promise. 2. Get a professional email address. When you were in high school, partydude234@emailprovider.com or cutiepie6@myemail.com probably seemed like awesome email addresses. But youre a professional now. Make sure your email address reflects that. 3. Keep it simple and concise. You may be tempted to include every project youve completed or accolade youve received during your career, but resist that temptation. No manager wants to wade through a five-page resume. Hit the high points, and keep it short. 4. Make sure the information you share is relevant. This goes with the point above, but even a brief resume could include unnecessary information. Think about the position for which you are applying and focus your resume on the aspects of your background that prove you can do that job. 5. Focus on accomplishments. This advice comes from a World Economic Forum article, which says that an experience section filled with job descriptions can be exhaustive and lengthy. Focus on what you accomplished in your role, not everything that the role entails. Heres the test: If a bullet point can be put on someone elses resume, it is a job description (something that anyone in your position can do) and not an accomplishment specific to you. 6. Use numbers. Your accomplishments will be easier for a hiring manager to understand if they are easily quantifiable. Provide specific data to show what you did and how you succeeded. 7. Address any gaps in your career history. If you were out of work for a significant chunk of time, include basic information about it. Every potential employer will ask about this during an interview, so you might as well explain it up front. 8. Avoid personal information. A useful tip from Business Insider says, Dont include your marital status, religious preference, or Social Security number. This might have been the standard in the past, but all of this information is now illegal for your employer to ask from you, so theres no need to include it. That advice applies to hobbies, too, unless theyre relevant to the position you seek. 9. Dont get too fancy. Your resume is meant to convey information clearly and quickly. An elaborate design may grab attention, but it could also frustrate recruiters if its hard to navigate. A basic format using one or two fonts (and 10- to 12-point type), bullet points, and simple lists is the best way to go. 10. Remember the editors. Nothing is more jarring to a hiring manager than a resume riddled with grammatical and spelling errors. Ask at least two trusted friends or colleagues to carefully edit your resume. The more the better, as something that one person misses may stand out to another. These might not be the most trendy suggestions youll find when you ask the Internet for resume help. But if you follow them, you can rest assured that the information you provide recruiters will be clear, concise, and complete. If your goal is to help the company learn about you and what you can do, such a resume should at least help you get your foot in the door.

If you dont use it soon, you will definitely lose it
If you don't use it soon, you will definitely lose it If you don't use it soon, you will definitely lose it Russell Ballard tells the story of a seven year old girl who started a tomato plant for a second grade project. She was taught that one tiny seed had the potential to become a tomato, which contained many seeds that could make many tomatoes. In the seven year oldâs words, âAnd if all of those seeds were planted and grew more tomatoes, and you planted all of those seeds, in a few seasons you would have millions of tomatoes.âUnfortunately, she almost killed her starter tomato plant. In her youthful immaturity, she left the plant in a dark room for a few days and totally forgot about it.âWhen I remembered the plant, it was all wilted and dead looking. I cried because I thought of all of those millions of tomatoes that would never grow.âShe was devastated, and likely nervous to tell her teacher that she had killed her plant. Her mom told her that the plant might not be dead yet, and that with some proper nourishment - sunlight and water - the plant might revive. The girl put the plant right by the window where it could get tons of sunlight. She regularly gave the plant water. And a âmiracleâ occurred, the plant almost immediately began thriving and growing tomatoes.Nothing Is PermanentEverything is in a state of movement. Nothing remains in a state of isolation without being changed.Either youâre growing or youâre going backwards. If you donât continually hone your mind and body, you will become foggy and flabby.Human beings, like tomato plants, are organic structures that need constant nourishment. Without a nourishing environment, it doesnât matter how much potential you have. If you are in a dark room for long, you will wilt, and potentially die.No amount of willpower in a dark room will save your life. You need healthy nourishment from the outside world. Gritting your teeth and trying to do it on your own wonât work. You need the right environment and you need the right behavior. In order to even develop powerful characteristics and inter nal strength in the first place, you need amazing inputs from your environment. As Zig Ziglar said, âYour input determines your outlook. Your outlook determines your output, and your output determines your future.âHowever, there is never a point at which youâve arrived, and no longer need constant nourishment. Even after youâve developed incredible internal clarity, motivation, education, and strength, if you donât create an environment that supports the growth youâve made, you will lose the growth youâve made.If youâre not continually being challenged to rise to new heights, you will become stagnant and stale as a person. If youâre not growing, youâre going backwards.Alain de Botton once said, âAnyone who isnât embarrassed of who they were last year probably isnât learning enough.âIf youâre still the same person you were 12 months ago, what the heck have you been doing? When was the last time you pushed yourself to exhaustion in a workout? When was the last time you really learned something? And true learning is far different from acquiring information - learning involves a permanent change in how you see and act in the world. If you didnât change, you didnât learn. As Albert Einstein said, âThe measure of intelligence is the ability to change.âRest and recovery are absolutely essential. But you wonât get the benefits from rest and recovery if youâre not truly pushing and expanding yourself regularly. Your rest will truly be sweet if youâre earning it through a life worth living.Emotions Are The Key To GrowthIf youâre not having regular transformational experiences, then youâre not stepping out of your comfort zone enough. Human beings are transformed through emotions, not logic and reason.Emotions are heavily tied to memory, and memory is your record of the past. However, your memory is not fixed and unchanging. Actually, your memory is constantly being changed and reshaped as you 1) face the emotions that w ill keep you stuck, and 2) as you experience new emotions that create new memories. The more intense the emotional experience, the deeper the memory and learning. If you want to experience an insane amount of growth, do something that is emotionally challenging. Do something that is awkward. And most importantly, do something in which you cannot predict the outcome.Tim Ferriss has said, âA personâs success in life can usually be measured by the number of uncomfortable conversations he or she is willing to have.âConfidence is being fine taking on challenges and situations in which you cannot predict the outcome. The reason people stay stuck is because they really like to predict how things will go.Not being sure of outcomes freaks people out. Therefore, people live very predictable lives. They donât go too far outside of their comfort zone. They veer far from awkwardness and potential embarrassment. They are caged by their emotions.Want to make powerful change?Do something th at requires courage and commitment, today. Do something that might fail. This is how you develop and demonstrate confidence.Confidence is organic, like a tomato plant. If you donât use it, youâll lose it. Confidence is like a muscle you must exercise and use, daily, to make stronger. Yet, the nourishment for confidence is both trying and succeeding. Just by trying, even if you fail, youâll have gained confidence because youâll have attempted something in which the outcome was not predictable.Just as confidence is organic and ever-changing, so is your identity.Identity Follows ChoiceYour identity is not fixed. You donât have some personality you were born with that remains the same. Like a garden, your identity is either becoming more polished and refined, or more entangled, confused, and distracted.Your identity does not produce your behavior. Your behavior shapes your identity. You are responsible for who you become. You are the designer of your personality. In the brilli ant book, The Cult of Personality Testing: How Personality Tests Are Leading Us to Miseducate Our Children, Mismanage Our Companies, and Misunderstand Ourselves, author Annie Murphy Paul explains, using plenty of hard evidence, how personality tests - our Western obsession - are dooming us to failure.Western thinkers are obsessed with isolated variables and fixed traits. We fail to realize the continually altering context that shapes and re-shapes those traits and variables. There are no permanent traits, but continually changing STATES.Then why do we see such regularity in our behaviors and attitudes? According to Stanford psychologist, Lee Ross, âWe see consistency in everyday life because of the power of the situation.âRoss further posits that ultimately, itâs the situation and not the person, that determines things. âPeople are predictable, thatâs true⦠But theyâre predictable because we see them in situations where their behavior is constrained by that situat ion and the roles theyâre occupying and the relationships they have with us.âSupply Follows DemandâI think the ability of the average man could be doubled if it were demanded, if the situation demanded.â - William DurantMost people believe they have a fixed and permanent identity and personality. They overvalue and rely on such things as personality tests. They donât put themselves into situations of high demand that force them to become something fundamentally more and different than they currently are.You can put yourself into a situation - mentally and physically - where the demands are high. This is a very potent cocktail for forward movement. You need both: the internal and external to pull you forward. The internal and external are two indistinguishable parts of the same whole - not separate.Internally, you need a white-hot WHY. As Friedrich Nietzsche wisely said, âHe who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.â Thus, the advice to âlive within your meansâ is actually quite terrible advice when taken to its logical conclusion. Rather than living within your means, you need to DECIDE what you need, then let the means come to you. They will come once youâve fully decided what you seek. To quote Rumi, âWhat you seek is seeking you.â Once resolved and committed, âthe universe conspires to make it happenâ as Emerson put it.Externally, you need a situation that has enormous demand. So much demand that the supply comes, both from you and from external factors. When youâre clear on what you want and why, magic happens. Dreams become realities. Faith becomes sure knowledge.Inspiration Follows ActionBut where does this clarity and purpose come from?Again, here Western culture generally has it backwards. The common belief is that inspiration creates action, when the opposite is more true.Action creates inspiration.Forward progress creates motivation.Bold action reshapes your conscious and subconsious patterns.Action gen erates the best thinking, because positive action creates inner confidence - which is the soil for positive thought.Paralysis comes from analysis. As author and performance coach, Tim Grover, said, âDonât think. You already know what you have to do, and you know how to do it. Whatâs stopping you?âYou know enough. The reason youâre mentally blocked, demotivated, and confused is because youâre not acting.Behavior shapes identity.Behavior shapes ideas and motivation.Begin acting well.Create situations that FORCE you to act well. Situations of such extreme DEMAND that trigger both an internal and external SUPPLY to match the demand. When the why is strong, the how develops organically. The most clever and bold strategies come when the demand is high. Necessity is the mother of invention. The WHY becomes strong as you act. You must act. That is where your freedom lies. When you act, the ideas will come. As you continue to act, more ideas will come. The bolder the action, the greater the shattering of subconscious patterns - opening the window for better and clearer thinking.Creativity Follows CreationAs you act, youâll get an inflow of thoughts and ideas. Youâll then need to turn those ideas into tangible creations for the use and benefit of other people.Inspiration doesnât lead to creativity. Creating things leads to inspiration, which then generates a greater desire to create. The quality of your ideas come from the quality of your choices. Every choice generates like offspring of thinking and ideas. Hence, success begets success. Creativity begets even greater creativity.Behavior shapes identity.Behavior shapes ideas.Put yourself in a situation that demands your greatest behavior. Then watch as a seemingly endless supply of intrinsic motivation and extrinsic help aids you.Ready to Upgrade?Iâve created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately.
